Don’t hurry through it! You may be entitled to deductions you’re overlooking. If you’re in a rush, you’ll miss out on some extra cash. Slow down… it’s worth it.
And if you’re really in a pinch for time, be sure you e-file. Not only does this reduce the chance for human error (only you will be inputting data) you’ll get your refund faster too!
Remember life changes that can trigger a tax break. Did you get married, have a child, get a divorce, buy a home, go back to school or retire? If so, indicate it when you file!
Stay up to date on new tax codes. Go to irs.gov for a list of highlights on any tax changes for this year. Be sure to refer to the “What’s New” section.
If you no longer have a mortgage, don’t forget property tax deductions!
If you know you’re going to be filing late, the IRS has made it easy to file for an extension using Form 4868. But beware, if you owe taxes, you will be responsible for penalties and interest for PAYING taxes late. No penalties for late refunds, however.
And if you’re near any of these establishments on April 17th, you could grab a great discount! But don’t forget stores that aren’t listed below. Some, like Office Depot, who offered free copies and shredding last year on tax day, may not have yet announced planned savings this year.
