100 Processors on One Computer Chip: Anant Argawal, MIT director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, recently figured out how to stuff 100 processors onto a single computer chip with the help of his colleagues. This means — faster servers that can do more things and consume less power.
Genius Releases First Eco-friendly, Battery-free Wireless Mouse: Forget having to maintain an endless supply of AA or AAA batteries for your wireless mouse, now you can do a quick three-minute charge each day with this mouse’s electric double-layer ultracapacitor and you are all set. It runs on a 2.4 Ghz connection. Its warranty covers up to 100,000 charges (days). It’s expected to hit store shelves with a price of around $39.99.
Tide Pods – a New Way to Do Laundry: Tide is introducing a neat, compact way to do laundry, no matter how big or small your load. It’s a detergent, stain remover and brightener all in one that completely dissolves in water (even cold water) and leaves no left-over detergent on your clothes of bottom of washer. Tide Pods are due to hit stores in February.
Sandia Chemists Find Way to Clean Radioactive Gas from Nuclear Fuel: This new technology could be used to clean up nuclear reactor accidents or applied to the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. It can also be used to reduce the volume of high-level waste.
University of Virginia Starts U.Va. Innovation: The University of Virginia has added more programs designed to increase the institution’s impact on society with more innovative discoveries. The Vice President of Research, Thomas C. Skalak, said, “America’s future depends on our capability to produce new basic knowledge and to develop solutions to major global challenges.”
