Smart Movies to Watch in 2012

DVDs are great for indoor entertainment, but sometimes you really just need to get out. There are quite a few films coming up in the first half of 2012 that are sure to tickle your funny bone, spark a twinkle in your eyes, invoke the need to snuggle up to your movie mate or cause you to jump straight out of your seat all together.

Whether you are an action-adventure, sci-fi, romantic comedy or drama enthusiast, there are a few movies we think you might find interesting in the coming months.

Underworld: Awakening
Release Date: 1/20/2012

Synopsis: Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species. (Rated R)

Man on a Ledge
Release Date: 1/27/2012

Synopsis: Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) makes a desperate and life-threatening move to prove his innocence after he is framed for the theft of a rare, prized diamond. But as one police negotiator soon learns, Nick’s daredevil stunt, captivating the eyes of the public and media, masks a dangerous ploy to reveal the truth about his tarnished name. Nick’s intricate plan must work perfectly, but when you’re on the 25th floor ledge of a building, going down takes on an entirely more hair-raising meaning. (Rated PG-13)

  The Woman in Black
Release Date: 2/03/2012

Synopsis: A young lawyer (Daniel Radcliffe) travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. (Rated PG-13)

  The Secret World of Arrietty
Release Date:  2/17/2012

Synopsis: Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14 year-old, lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) usually remains hidden from view, but when 12 year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger. (Rated G)

Synopsis: This light-hearted drama follows a great rivalry between a father and his son, their need for each other and their need for respect and recognition in the world. (Rated PG)

  The Hunger Games
Release Date:  3/23/2012

Synopsis: Set in the future where the Capitol selects one boy and girl from each district to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year-old from a poor territory that was once Appalachia, volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in the game and becomes a gladiator in the reality show. Now she must battle for her life against other teens from the 12 districts of the former United States. (Rated PG-13)

  Mirror Mirror
Release Date: 3/30/2012

Synopsis: A reimagining of the classic fairy tale starring Oscar winner Julia Roberts as the Queen, Lily Collins as Snow White, Armie Hammer as Prince Alcott, Sean Bean as the King and Nathan Lane as the Queen’s hapless and bungling servant, Brighton. An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright. (Rated PG)

  The Avengers
Release Date: 5/04/2012

Synopsis:  Nick Fury and the international agency S.H.I.E.L.D. bring together a team of super humans (based on Marvel Comics characters Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, etc.) to form The Avengers to help save the earth various comic baddies. (Not Yet Rated)

  The Amazing Spider-Man
Release Date: 7/03/2012

Synopsis: A new Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is back on the big screen with a different spin on the comic hero story. In this production, Parker suffers regular high school woes and deals with his new super-human powers. (Not Yet Rated)

  The Dark Knight Rises
Release Date: 7/20/2012

Synopsis: Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, pushing it and its police force to their limits, forcing its former hero Batman to resurface after taking the fall for Harvey Dent’s crimes. (Not Yet Rated)
