Budget-Conscious Spring Staycation Ideas

March 27, 2012 by Cristina Habersetzer in Travel with 0 Comments

Why take a long flight, train ride or drive for hours when you can have a home-away-from-home experience in your own backyard? You can save money and rediscover the world around you while having a ton of fun with these creative ideas!

Plan a home spa retreat. Make your own scrubs, lotions and hair treatments from foods and ingredients in your pantry. Olive oil and sugar make fantastic scrubs while masks can be made from things like avocado and egg. Do a quick search online for DYI spa products and you’ll find a number of simple beauty recipes to make right from home.

Host a mid-week TV dinner party.  Invite your friends over to watch the latest episode of your favorite primetime television show while you munch on foods that are perfect for sharing. Whip out your Crockpot and head over to your grocer for an affordable piece of beef or pork. Since you’re slow cooking, even the toughest cut will be juicy and delicious over mashed potatoes and gravy. How about a pasta casserole? If finger foods are more your thing, you could try a cheese fondue for dipping fruits and bread. And don’t forget other affordable meats like chicken wings.

Have a picnic in the park with your family.  Pack some pasta salad, sandwiches, fruit and juice along with a blanket, book and kite and make a day of it at the park. The kids will enjoy playing and kite flying while you relax under a tree with a book. A day in the sun is the perfect way to kick back and relax.

Plant a family garden. Carve a space in your backyard for easy-to-grow plants, herbs and veggies. Don’t have a backyard? No worries! You can still have an herb and plant garden in wall, terrace or balcony planters. Lettuce, beans and tomatoes grow quickly and are easy to maintain. Basil and cilantro are popular herbs that can be continually harvested. For a spring flower that does well in the sun and heat, try a hibiscus plant.

Grab your neighbors and throw a block party. Drag the lawn chairs and grills into the cul-de-sac and fire up the stereo. BYOB and you’ve got a party! There’s nothing easier than organizing a potluck and inviting the neighborhood to join you outside to enjoy the weather this spring.

Cook a family-friendly dinner with your kids. Get creative with your children’s favorite foods. Teach them the value and fun of making your own meal with something easy to make, like pizza. You can let them pick their own toppings and help make the dough. Check out these kid-friendly recipes from Nick Jr.

Go fishing! Whether there’s an ocean, lake, pond, river or creek near you… there’s an opportunity to fish. Not only is this a relaxing activity, it’s one the whole family can enjoy. Take the opportunity to reconnect with yourself, your spouse or your kids. Sharing new adventures, looking for wildlife and having some one-on-one time can bring you closer together.

Be a tourist in your own town for a day. Any roadside attractions near your hometown that you’ve missed? How about a museum or local sporting event? Check out that new local restaurant you’ve been eyeing and be sure to look online for any deals that may be offered.
